Fair Trade Fundraiser Program: Idea Share - Cacao Co-op Farmer and Agronomist visit the Philbrick School
Three hundred students from four Boston area schools who fundraise with the Equal Exchange fundraising program had a special day in March. Cocoa farmers from the Dominican Republic Cocoa Cooperative, Conacado, visited the young scholars to speak with and listen to their questions about how cocoa is grown and is processed. Scholars learned about the very cocoa and the farmers who grow it for their fundraisers.

Memorable questions from the students included: "why do the cocoa pods change color when they are ripe?", "How does the cocoa get to us and the stores?", "how do you have time for each all that you have to take care of — a family, cocoa farm and farm animals?".

We all left realizing how with a little conversation—eaters and farmers—are closer and more dependent on each other than we realize. And left comforted by what's possible when children start to get involved thinking about our food and farmers who grow it.
