| Fair Trade Fundraiser Program: Pen Pal Program |
Our Pen Pal project helps to create personal relationships between students in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic and bring to life the mission of Fair Trade in a way no other educational materials can. Exchanging letters with a pen pal is also a great way to practice Spanish and learn about a different culture.
- Equal Exchange will match each classroom or group in the U.S. with a class of students in the Dominican Republic.
- Each individual student will correspond directly with a Dominican student through letter exchanges throughout the 2008 – 2009 school year. Read sample pen pal letters. (PDF)
- Many of the Dominican students with whom you are communicating are children and/or grandchildren of cacao farmers from the CONACADO co-operative. (Fair Trade and organic cacao from CONADCAO can be found in Equal Exchange’s chocolate bars, hot cocoas, and baking cocoa.) CONACADO is comprised of eight different regional associations, called "bloques." Student pen pals will be from Yamasa, or Bloque 2. You can read more about CONACADO on our website.
