Learning Outside the Classroom Walls |
By Virginia Berman, Fundraising Program Director
Seventh grade students from Spanish and French language classes at The Gordon School, located in East Providence, Rhode Island, visited the Equal Exchange roaster and warehouse in West Bridgewater, Mass., in May.
The Gordon School has participated in the Equal Exchange Pen Pal Program for two school years and with two different groups of students. This spring, they'll start their first Equal Exchange fundraiser. Foreign language teachers at the school have also incorporated lessons from the Equal Exchange curriculum and are excited to teach more lessons in the future.
What does the Equal Exchange warehouse offer curious kids? Lots, including two big German-built Probat drum roasters, packing machines, and exclusive chocolate tasting for all participants.
"We loved our field trip to Equal Exchange," said Suzanne Pezzuli, a Spanish teacher at The Gordon School. "Our seventh graders saw, smelled, tasted, touched the coffee and chocolate, and got a real behind-the-scenes look at a national, leading Fair Trader. Our students will never look at chocolate in the same way! We bring our new thinking to Gordon and back home in Rhode Island; we hope to do a fundraiser and eat only good chocolate."
