Letter from CEPICAFE: Election of Marisol Espinoza Cruz to Congress Print
Piura, Peru - May 11, 2005

Dear friends,

Please receive fraternal greetings from the 6,635 families of organized small producers of the Coffee Producers Central in Piura – CEPICAFE. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you the joys of having achieved a voice for coffee producers in the new Congress of the Republic, with the election of Marisol Espinoza Cruz.

Organized coffee producers in Piura analyzed and discussed the electoral process and the political climate; after studying the various proposals put forth for our region, we decided that there was a need to have a representation in the congress, and for this reason, we agreed to support the candidature of Marisol Espinoza, who is well known for her commitment to the struggles, demands and needs of the agricultural sector in Piura.

Official results place her in first place for the congress; she obtained 14,000 votes mainly from coffee producer districts, and is the candidate with the greatest number of votes in Piura.

This achievement in Piura is our contribution to the defense of agriculture in Peru, specifically regarding coffee. The elected Congresswoman of the Republic, Marisol Espinoza Cruz, will coordinate her work with the “Junta Nacional de Café” (the National Coffee Board) to improve conditions for the development of coffee-related activities and of agriculture in Peru. This opportunity will add to the efforts of coffee producer organizations in the country, as we all have to fight for our citizens and to present organized proposals.

We are waiting for news from other regions of the country with similar experiences to create a representation of agricultural interests in the Congress of the Republic and to assure that the defense and promotion of small agriculture is in the agenda of the legislative powers and that the voice of small coffee producers and organized producers is heard in the Congress.

Together, we farmers can do it!

For a trade with justice!

For a Country for all!

Segundo Guerrero Mondragón, CEPICAFE President

Santiago Paz López, CEPICAFE Manager
