Reverse Trick-or-Treating Update
In 2007, shortly before Halloween, Equal Exchange teamed up with a coalition of non-profit and faith-based organizations, as well as fellow Fair Traders like La Siembra in Canada, to launch the Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign to raise awareness about forced child labor in the cocoa trade. Despite being a last-minute effort, the coalition was able to reach approximately 50,000 households in 275 communities across North America, with Equal Exchange providing over 60 percent of the informational cards and mini-chocolates that were distributed.

Because of the enthusiastic response to last year’s campaign, and because cocoa/chocolate industry heavy-weights like Cargill and Nestlé have still not resolved this problem, we decided to repeat and expand the campaign. Thanks to the early outreach efforts by groups like Global Exchange, Co-op America, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, our partners in the Methodist community, and the participation of a dozen consumer food co-ops nationwide, this Halloween Equal Exchange will distribute 200,000 cards and dark chocolate minis to over 700 groups across the country. All told the coalition hopes to reach almost a quarter-million households in 1,000 communities in the U.S. and Canada. We greatly appreciate all of the groups that have signed up and are hoping this will help push the chocolate industry to finally reform its practices.
