New Partnership with Two Angry Moms
By Ashley Symons, Marketing Writer

This fall, the Equal Exchange Fundraising & Education Program started a partnership with Two Angry Moms, a movement started by Amy Kalafa and Susan Rubin. Amy, a filmmaker, and Susan, a nutritionist, are committed to transforming school food and lunch programs to provide healthier options. Their film, Two Angry Moms, focuses on what is wrong with the food we are serving our kids, what people can do to change it, and offers positive solutions toward making fresh, healthy food a part of every education. "For Equal Exchange, the partnership makes sense because healthy, holistic food education should extend outside of the cafeteria, and our Fundraising Program provides concrete tools for enacting those kinds of changes," said Kelsie Evans, Fundraising Program Coordinator. "Our goal is to combine awareness with action, so that people make a concrete step toward enacting change on a local level."

As part of this partnership, Equal Exchange has sponsored film screenings of Two Angry Moms for groups who have signed up to participate in the Equal Exchange Fundraising Program.

Amy visited Equal Exchange headquarters in Massachusetts in early November. She shared the story of how Two Angry Moms came to be, and about the reaction people have had to the film’s message. Amy said, "I wanted to tell the story of food and the impact it has on our lives. I’ve met so many angry moms - moms who are interested in sustainability, the health of the planet, and the health of their kids." Now she’s seen pockets of activism all around the country, brought on by angry parents. She suggested parents start by looking at their school district’s wellness guidelines. "Once you’ve made healthy food your mission, it’s a good first step."
