Equal Exchange started selling fairly traded coffee in 1986. Over the last two decades, we've expanded our successful alternative trade model to other industries – namely chocolate, tea, domestically-grown snacks, and bananas.
In 2001, Equal Exchange broke into the chocolate industry with fairly traded Organic Hot Cocoa Mix. The chocolate industry remains one of the most exploitative in the world, relying heavily on forced child slave labor in West Africa. We saw an opportunity to create positive change to this traditionally-oppressive trade model.
We began sourcing cacao exclusively from small-scale farmer co-operatives. We've worked closely with our farmer partners in the Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador and Peru, to ensure high-quality cacao that is farmed and processed in sustainable ways.
