Celebrate World Fair Trade Day |
|
|
World Fair Trade Day is May 10. Here are some easy ways to show your support of Fair Trade:
• Send a letter to the Chocolate Manufacturers of America urging them to stop using child labor in their chocolate products. You can also encourage your organization to endorse the Commitment to Ethical Cocoa Sourcing (to do so contact Tim Newman). And, look for Fair Trade chocolates – like Equal Exchange Organic Baking Cocoa or Organic Very Dark Chocolate.
• Urge Congress to update the Farm Bill and bring economic justice to small farmers in the United States. You can also support farmers in the U.S. by purchasing Equal Exchange snacks.
• Bring Fair Trade to your school or organization with the Equal Exchange Fair Trade Fundraising Program. You can also encourage teachers to use the Equal Exchange Fair Trade curriculum, Win Win Solutions.
• Ask for Equal Exchange and other Fair Trade products at your supermarket or food co-op. Get tips here.
• Research where the foods you buy come from. Read about Equal Exchange’s farmer partners in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the United States.
• Host an educational event – give a talk on Fair Trade at a school, church or community group.
• Write a letter to the editor of your local paper urging community members to support Fair Trade. Contact your local paper for specifications.
• Make a meal or craft project using only Fair Trade items. For recipes using Equal Exchange products, go to our recipe page.
• Host a film viewing and discussion. Show a film such as “Black Gold,” which features OCFCU co-op, an Equal Exchange partner for Ethiopian coffee.
• Buy or make a Fair Trade Mother’s Day gift. Check out Ten Thousand Villages or browse the Equal Exchange gift baskets on our Retail web store.
• Serve Equal Exchange coffee at your place of worship through our Interfaith program.
• Host a Fair Trade house party. Learn more here.
• Read a book on Fair Trade. Suggested reading: The Coffee Book, available on our web store or The Coffee Crisis: Confronting the Coffee Crisis: Fair Trade, Sustainable Livelihoods and Ecosystems in Mexico and Central America, available through MIT Press.
